Leftism is a matter of degree and we need to remember that there are extreme Rightists who would regard more moderate conservatives as Leftists. I myself have been variously called both a far-Leftist and a far-Rightist, though not usually in such polite terms. So what is the best indicator of how Leftist someone is? In answer, I think the basic guide is that the further Left we go, the more government intervention in people's lives is demanded and practiced. All governments exercise power over people's lives in one way or another but the more Leftist you are, the more pervasive and all-encompassing you will want that government meddling, influence and direction to be. And, by that criterion, note that so-called "Rightists" such as Mussolini's Fascists and Hitler's Nazis were FAR to the Left.

This root and branch rejection of heredity was of course what underlay Stalin's support of Trofim Lysenko's otherwise thoroughly discredited Lamarckian theory of evolution -- the idea that characteristics acquired in one's lifetime can be passed on to one's offspring. Marx himself clearly had Lamarckian ideas of a sort, believing that the "soil" and the geology on which one lived influenced what one became. Geras (1983) has however argued that this did not mean that Marx totally rejected the idea of human nature. Later Leftists, however, often have done so.

A U.S. district judge on Monday threw out the nation's health care law, declaring it unconstitutional because it violates the Commerce Clause and surely reviving a feud among competing philosophies about the role of government. Judge Roger Vinson, in Pensacola, Fla., ruled that as a result of the unconstitutionality of the "individual mandate" that requires people to buy insurance, the entire law must be declared void. "I must reluctantly conclude that Congress exceeded the bounds of its authority in passing the act with the individual mandate. That is not to say, of course, that Congress is without power to address the problems and inequities in our health care system. The health care market is more than one-sixth of the national economy, and without doubt Congress has the power to reform and regulate this market. That has not been disputed in this case. The principal dispute has been about how Congress chose to exercise that power here," Vinson wrote. The more important question is that if our president swore to defend and uphold the constitution, then why did he hire hundreds of attorneys to "craft" the language of this law in order to (unsuccessfully) circumvent the constitution? Is that not a direct violation of his oath of office?

Had today's political class been in power in 1623, tomorrow's holiday would have been called "Starvation Day" instead of Thanksgiving. Of course, most of us wouldn't be alive to celebrate it.

Every year around this time, schoolchildren are taught about that wonderful day when Pilgrims and Native Americans shared the fruits of the harvest. But the first Thanksgiving in 1623 almost didn't happen.

Long before the failure of modern socialism, the earliest European settlers gave us a dramatic demonstration of the fatal flaws of collectivism. Unfortunately, few Americans today know it.

The Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony organized their farm economy along communal lines. The goal was to share the work and produce equally.

The Democratic majority in Congress is gone as Americans reject his agenda. Yet more must be done: Mr. Obama should be impeached.. beginning January 2011.

He is slowly - piece by painful piece - erecting a socialist dictatorship. We are not there - yet. But he is putting America on that dangerous path. He is undermining our constitutional system of checks and balances; subverting democratic procedures and the rule of law; presiding over a corrupt, gangster regime; and assaulting the very pillars of traditional capitalism. Like Venezuela's leftist strongman, Hugo Chavez, Mr. Obama is bent on imposing a revolution from above - one that is polarizing America along racial, political and ideological lines. Mr. Obama is the most divisive president since Richard Nixon. His policies are Balkanizing the country. It's time for him to go.

Sure, go ahead. I think a law that says “no, absolutely never” is a bad law.
